Issue 8 Spotlight: Leanne Mai-ly, Founder of VAUTE Vegan Clothing Line

Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart has changed the face of fashion by creating VAUTE, a vegan + eco + made in NYC clothing line for women and men. She made history by being the first entirely vegan fashion brand to show at New York Fashion Week in 2013, proving that our clothes can indeed be both chic and ethical.

We catch up with the 34 year old, Brooklyn based vegan in Thoughtfully Mag Issue 8’s Makeup & Mantra to get her take on a realer side to beauty. Her mantra:

“You’re already beautiful—now have fun!”

Why is a thoughtful approach to beauty important to you?

When it comes to creating beauty products, the thought of knowing that they’re being tested on animals is so barbaric to me. As a young girl, I would call up beauty companies directly with a list of questions about their testing policies and those conversations often resulted in backlash. Being thoughtful about my own beauty is something that I’m still learning. There’s nothing more beautiful than a woman who is at peace with the way she looks and feels, but it’s something that definitely takes time to master.

How do you deal with negative emotions about your beauty or changes in your appearance?
I look at my perceived shortcomings and stop to think how these qualities make me different in a positive light. It’s not easy, but it’s a process that helps me get there. We’re so used to looking at airbrushed, well-lit, static images of men and women that we often forget that their true beauty lies beneath all of those filters.

How do you nourish your beauty from the inside out?
I drink a green juice daily. I sleep (if I can!) a lot. I spend a lot of cuddle time with my rescued animals. I also journal, practice yoga and indulge in books by my favorite authors, Thich Naht Hahn and Pema Chodron.
